Recent integral cross section validation measurements at the ASP facility
This work presents new integral data measured at the ASP 14 MeV neutron
irradiation facility at Aldermaston in the UK, which has recently become
available for fusion-related work through the CCFE materials programme.
Measurements of reaction products from activation experiments using elemental
foils were carried out using gamma spectrometry in a high efficiency,
high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector and associated digital signal processing
hardware. Following irradiation and rapid extraction to the measurement cell,
gamma emissions were acquired with both energy and time bins. Integral cross
section and half-life data have been derived from these measurements. Selected
integral cross section values are presented from the measurement campaigns.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Construction of Parseval wavelets from redundant filter systems
We consider wavelets in L^2(R^d) which have generalized multiresolutions.
This means that the initial resolution subspace V_0 in L^2(R^d) is not singly
generated. As a result, the representation of the integer lattice Z^d
restricted to V_0 has a nontrivial multiplicity function. We show how the
corresponding analysis and synthesis for these wavelets can be understood in
terms of unitary-matrix-valued functions on a torus acting on a certain vector
bundle. Specifically, we show how the wavelet functions on R^d can be

Fast non-negative deconvolution for spike train inference from population calcium imaging
Calcium imaging for observing spiking activity from large populations of
neurons are quickly gaining popularity. While the raw data are fluorescence
movies, the underlying spike trains are of interest. This work presents a fast
non-negative deconvolution filter to infer the approximately most likely spike
train for each neuron, given the fluorescence observations. This algorithm
outperforms optimal linear deconvolution (Wiener filtering) on both simulated
and biological data. The performance gains come from restricting the inferred
spike trains to be positive (using an interior-point method), unlike the Wiener
filter. The algorithm is fast enough that even when imaging over 100 neurons,
inference can be performed on the set of all observed traces faster than
real-time. Performing optimal spatial filtering on the images further refines
the estimates. Importantly, all the parameters required to perform the
inference can be estimated using only the fluorescence data, obviating the need
to perform joint electrophysiological and imaging calibration experiments.Comment: 22 pages, 10 figure

GlycomeDB integrates the structural and taxonomic data of all major public carbohydrate databases, as well as carbohydrates contained in the Protein Data Bank, which renders the database currently the most comprehensive and unified resource for carbohydrate structures worldwide. GlycomeDB retains the links to the original databases and is updated at weekly intervals with the newest structures available from the source databases. The complete database can be downloaded freely or accessed through a Web-interface (www.glycome-db.org) that provides flexible and powerful search functionalities

Regulation of cell cycle transition and induction of apoptosis in HL-60 leukemia cells by lipoic acid: role in cancer prevention and therapy
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Lipoic acid (LA), a potent antioxidant, has been used as a dietary supplement to prevent and treat many diseases, including stroke, diabetes, neurodegenerative and hepatic disorders. Recently, potent anti-tumorigenic effects induced by LA were also reported and evident as assayed by suppression of cell proliferation and induction of apoptosis in malignant cells. However, the mechanism by which LA elicits its chemopreventive effects remains unclear.</p> <p>Methods and Results</p> <p>Herein, we investigated whether LA elicits its anti-tumor effects by inducing cell cycle arrest and cell death in human promyelocytic HL-60 cells. The results showed that LA inhibits both cell growth and viability in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Disruption of the G<sub>1</sub>/S and G<sub>2</sub>/M phases of cell cycle progression accompanied by the induction of apoptosis was also observed following LA treatment. Cell cycle arrest by LA was correlated with dose-dependent down regulation of Rb phosphorylation, likely via suppression of E2F-dependent cell cycle progression with an accompanying inhibition of cyclin E/cdk2 and cyclin B1/cdk1 levels. Evidence supporting the induction of apoptosis by LA was based on the appearance of sub-G<sub>1 </sub>peak in flow cytometry analysis and the cleavage of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) from its native 112-kDa form to the 89-kDa truncated product in immunoblot assays. Apoptosis elicited by LA was preceded by diminution in the expression of anti-apoptotic protein bcl-2 and increased expression of apoptogenic protein bax, and also the release and translocation of apoptosis inducing factor AIF and cytochrome c from the mitochondria to the nucleus, without altering the subcellular distribution of the caspases.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study provides evidence that LA induces multiple cell cycle checkpoint arrest and caspase-independent cell death in HL-60 cells, in support of its efficacious potential as a chemopreventive agent.</p
